Chapter

Sixteen

I took my time walking through the tunnel back to the arena floor, needing a moment to reflect.

“What do you think, Lucy? Is there anyone else I should speak to?”

She crossed her arms and bit into a nail. “No, not that I can think of. You’ve spoken to the people I think could have done it, plus a few others. What if the murderer wasn’t a coworker?”

“It’s certainly possible,” I said. “Why would someone who doesn’t work here kill him with a sword?”

“Good point,” she said, “but you never know.”

At least it was since I found Paige Whitaker rolled up in a rug by the delivery alcove at my bookstore. I checked the time on my phone. “It’s about time for lunch. What do you say? My treat.”

She patted her flat belly. “Well, my stomach is grumbling. It might be a little weird though, me and you.”

“It will be if you think about our shared past. Come on, as old acquaintances catching up. Nothing romantic.”

We walked on, and after a few steps, she said, “Okay, I’m in. Where are we going?”

“There’s a spot at Broadway at the Beach.”

As we returned to the arena floor, shouts and the clashing of swords and shields greeted us. The cast was practicing for one of the grand scale staged battles Emperor Nero enjoyed. Gladiators skirmished. Lance was at the forefront, engaged with a massive human.

We kept to the side and hugged the walls as we made our way to the opposite side. We didn’t want to get near the fray.

Energy radiated from the performers. Lucy was right, it was different down here on ground level watching the action. Our elevated front-row table last night didn’t convey the level of physicality and violence before us.

We were halfway around the arena floor when a half-dozen members of law enforcement swarmed from a tunnel, led by Detective Moody. Gomez and two sheriff’s deputies followed. I recognized them as Officers O’Brien and Nichols. The first responders to the scene when I called 911 after finding Paige.

“Cut! Cut!” Morty yelled into a bullhorn from a raised platform along the opposite sideline. “What is the meaning of this?”

The sea of fighters and soldiers parted ways. The contrast in modern clothing and Roman garb made me feel as though I’d stepped into a bizarre time-travel novel. As a team, they ignored him and zeroed in on one person. Edward Moore.

Officer Nichols stopped before Ed. In a commanding tone, she said, “Edward Moore?”

Edward, to his credit, didn’t seem taken aback. More like puzzled. “Yes. Can I help you?”

“We are placing you under arrest for the murder of Connor West.”

“What?” Ed shouted as his cast mates gasped and took another involuntary step back.

“That’s right. We found evidence that you committed this murder. Anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law...”

After going through the rest of the Miranda Rights, they led Ed away in handcuffs where they disappeared into the dark tunnel, leaving fifty cast members and support crew stunned.
